Coast to Coast - Drove Roads & Heather

 Start and finish near Thirsk from 6am to approx 6pm. Although we will be using a vehicle to access different locations, periods of walking will be required but this will probably not be more than 2 miles in any one session and the day’s total should not exceed 8 miles. Moderate walking over footpaths and bridle tracks. Lunch included but bring your own snacks and drinks (limited opportunities for shopping en route)

From around mid-August, vast swathes of heather in full bloom transform the North Yorkshire Moors into a landscape of unsurpassable beauty, in which isolated hamlets appear to be cast adrift upon a rolling, purple ocean. The National Park is also crossed by ancient drove roads,  still flanked by their original stone way markers, several of which are crudely carved with phonetically spelt place names. By using carefully selected road access points, we will be able to increase the number of locations visited during the day and most importantly, ensure that we are in the right place at the right time to capitalise on optimum lighting conditions.
